Temperament
- Active
- One of the most important factors of a Belgian Malinois, is their energy levels. As they require a lost of exercise and mental stimulation. Belgian Malinois also display herding behavior such as chasing and circling, which in some homes might cause problems with active small children.
- Smart
- One of the other stand out characteristics of Belgian Malinois, is there thier intelligence. They are one of the smartest breeds of dogs, which can be beneficial and a negative. As this can make training much easier as they are quick to understand commands. However, this can also be a negative as they can be natural escape artists in my experience; With Bodhi having learned how to open a top latch baby gate with his mouth in about 4 seconds. *sigh*
- Loyal / Protective
- Belgian Malinois have strong protective and territorial instincts. However, they can make excellent pets for the right homes, as they thrive with loving companionship. In my experience, Belgian Malinois' can be the sterotypical "velcro dog", however they can also be very independant.
